About AfriTan Tannery

AfriTan Tannery was established in 2002 in a farm shed in Dundee, Northern KwaZulu-Natal. From humble beginnings, it has grown into a proudly South African brand known for premium-quality tanning and authentic local products.

In 2009, Hanno van den Berg—an experienced tanner trained at the International School of Tanning Technology—joined the business. He took over full ownership of AfriTan in February 2023, continuing its commitment to quality, sustainability, and homegrown craftsmanship.

AfriTan specializes in the tanning of Nguni hides, sheepskins, and various game skins—all sourced from within Southern Africa. These hides are expertly processed and transformed into high-quality products that reflect the rich heritage and natural beauty of the country. AfriTan also operates a retail store in Dundee, serving both local and international customers.

What sets AfriTan apart is its unwavering South African identity. AfriTan only markets genuine Southern African Nguni hides and every hide is stamped with our seal of authenticity, reassuring customers that they are buying a product that is truly African in origin and character.

To meet growing demand, AfriTan has introduced mechanisation while maintaining its handcrafted quality. The tannery processes approximately 800 Nguni hides, 2,000 springbuck skins, 1,200 sheepskins, and a variety of other game skins each month.

Nguni hides are unique to southern Africa, offering a rich variety of natural colours and patterns. Dominant tones include black, white, and brown, with occasional hues like yellow, dun, or even tricolour blends. Each pattern traditionally carries a Zulu name, often inspired by animals, birds, or plants, connecting each hide to the land it comes from.
